Okay, here is another mystery. I find a Nancy Trudell (Indian name Wasupetowin) listed in the 1895 Birch Cooley census, aged 49, widow. She is listed again on the 1899 McLaughlin census, aged 54. Then again on the 1900 federal census as born in 1849. In 1895 and 1900 she is listed as a widow. 2 of the 6 Trudell brothers (August and Henry) married a Nancy, but both brothers were still living. August died in 1914, and Henry in 1920. Also, those Nancys are always listed as living with their husbands on other census records I have found. On all 3 census she is living next to or with Frank Trudell and his wife, Emma Deman. The 1900 census says that Nancy was Frank's mother. However, Frank's marriage record states that his parents were August Trudell and Louisa. The Santee Baptismal Register states the same. Also, the Nancy that was married to August is alsways living with him. In the 1900 census she is listed as mother of 1 child, deceased. So who is this Nancy Trudell? On the 1899 census Joseph Walker is living with her, aged 14, listed as her nephew. She was also living next door to Sophia Walker. I haven't been able to find any Walkers marrying into the Trudell line. As far as I know, there were no other Trudell brothers who lived. On the 1900 census, Mary Iciyapewin states she is the mother of 14 children, 6 still living. Those 6 are all accounted for. I know of 2 other sons, Samuel, born about 1838, and Joseph, born about 1845, but I can find no documentation of them, other than the 1860 federal census. There was a Joseph who died at Santee in 1882 that could have been this Joseph, but I'm not sure. Anybody have any ideas who this might be?

jimmy: here is whatI found for you: on the mixed blood census for 1855-56 there is a son named Joseph as you mentioned, plus Leon, francis,Jr., augustin, ,Henry(jr),Elizabeth. the 1860 Census for Hastings,Dakota MN lists frank(Sr) with wife mary, Joseph, Samuel, Argus(sp), henry(Jr), Peter, Ellen, and Autrime. The 1850 US Census for Osceola, Wisconsin lists a Francis Trudell age 40, born Canada with son John, son Peter and dau. Mary. The children were born in Wisconsin. I don't know why , but my gut hunch is that this is Frank Trudell Jr. with children by a previous marriage to a woman in before he had those kids with Hinginiwin, then married Martha Itekagawin, Maggie's half sister, before he married maggie.Remember he had a daughter Mary with his first spouse, and Mary married Louis Faribault. I will see what else I can find that may help resolve your questions. I and others have hwondered the same things, that you posted.

the Henry listed with Nancy and son Frank in the Mdewakanton Censuses is none other than August Henry Trudell. The emma listed as Franks wife is none other than Emma Deman, born at Santee Agency(Ref. Santee Agency Baptismal Register 1840-1904 or 6). the marriage certificate for Emma and Frank Trudell, lists her grandmother as none other than the wife of jacob Walker, on the 1885 and 1889 Mdewakanton censuses. Ergo, there was no such person as Emma Saul, it was Emma Deman. As for who the Joseph Walker is, My hunch is he is Nancy Trudell's nephew by one of her siblings.

That can't be Frank Jr. on the 1850 census in Wisconsin, he would have only been 10 years old! I have never heard August Trudell referred to as August Henry Trudell. He had a brother named Henry, also married to a Nancy. That is who I have assumed that is. But this still doesn't make sense. Why would Nancy's name be Trudell if she was a relative of Emma Deman? Every time I try to do this I just get more confused. ;D By the way, I would love to have a copy of that 1855 mixed blood census.

Jimmy: What I posted were just my guesses and hunches. I do not claim them to be the answer to your mystery. I apologize if I gave that impression. But, if Frank Trudell was the third born of Frank Sr's. children, where was he , when the 1860 Census was done at Hastings in 1860? In the 1860 Census for Hastings, he would have been @ 30 years old, if he were born @1838 give or take @ 5 years.according to the mormon archives. when Iwas doing a search for Frank Trudell, I came up with at least 6 different Frank Trudells, 6 nancy Trudells, and at least 3 Henry Trudells.

Sorry if I came off as rude in my last post. That is interesting about what you said about Frank not being present when the 1860 census was taken. His daughter Mary who married Louis Faribault was born in 1864. Frank was born in 1840, so it is quite possible he was married by 1860. But he isn't the only child missing. My gg grandfather, Levi, born in 1854 was also missing. Maybe he was at school? I have seen that Trudell in Wisconsin and have wondered about it. Francis Trudell Sr's pension records states that the family lived in Wisconsin for a time after the outbreak.

I have a new development. I just received August Trudell's probate record from cousin Carol. August's second wife, Nancy, deposes that August's first wife was also named Nancy, and had Frank Trudell. Later, Henry Trudell deposes on this same probate, that August's first wife was named Louise Winona. This must be the same woman. Perhaps she used both names? What do you think? By the way, it also mentions that Frank had a brother named Moses, but he died in infancy.

Jimmy, re. the louisa, do not think that she was also named Nancy. One of the Trudell descendants of Emma(Frank 's wife) said she found a record concerning the disposition of the late August Trudell, in which her (the descendent's) grandmother( could be g grandmother, I always have trouble with this) who was a daughter of Emma plus her sisters were named as August's beneficiarys. August died in Nebraska. anyway, Emma's daughters attended the Catholic boarding school at Pipestone and their records are at the NARA in Kansas City. Unfortunately, other than finding Nancy Trudell's death date and burial information at the Minn. State His. Soc. website, I haven't been able to find out who her parents were. I doubt we ever will. another interesting thing about this Frank Trudell Jr., is that I tracked a Frank Trudell and some other Trudells from , I believe Duguque,Iowa in 1870 to Sioux City , IA in the US Census records. By coincidence, Hinginiwin was also living there in Sioux city when Lucy Trudell was borrn. A group of Trudells also settled in Sioux city from Canada(see 1880 US Census for woodbury County). The Trudells back then, certainly weren't original when it came to nameing thier descendents. I kept seeing Mary, Henry , and Frank Trudell in the Census records. I was though told that Frank Trudell(Sr. and /or Jr.) worked for the Faribault's trading company back then. This may explain David Faribault writing a testimonial to Frank Sr. affidavit re. the Mixed Blood list. You can contact Edith Casaday at Nat. Fam. Res. Center in Sioux city to make arrangements re. The Mixed Blood Listings you mentioned . the number is 712-252-5902.

Thank you for looking into this. I have also found another August Trudell, living in Wisconsin in 1870, aged 70, and listed as half Indian. Could this be a sibling of Francis sr.? The family legend is that Francis Sr. moved to Minnesota with something like 5 brothers, 1 of which moved back to Canada. Other than that, I can't find any information about Francis Sr.'s family. There is a good chance that Francis's relatives could be named Perron. Francis Sr.'s full name was Francois Perron dit Trudell. At least 4 of his children were baptized under the name Perron, but the family later dropped the Perron and just went by Trudell.
After looking at August Trudell's probate, I must conclude that Louise Winona and Nancy are infact the same person. August's 2nd wife Nancy names August's 1st wife as Nancy, and that she was the mother of Frank. On the same document, August's brother Henry stated that August's previous wife was Louise Winona, and that she was the mother of Frank. He also stated that August had no other marriages. The 1900 census states that Frank's mother was Nancy, whereas his marriage record and the Santee Baptismal Register call her Louise.
Could you send me the date and burial information you found for Nancy? I would really appreciate it.

Jimmy re. Nancy Trudell death record. misplaced it. According to the one descendant, her death record is recorded in the Dakota county, MN courthouse. She told me that Nancy died around 1914-1916 in Dacota County, MN. also check with Edith Casaday, I think she mayhave a record of her death. Now that I have seen August's probate, I agree with you this Lucy winona and Nancy were one and the same person.

Jimmy: It is very possible that Frank Jr. also had a son Levi with the Hinginiwin, although he did not acknowledge it in Levi's baptismal record(Santee Agency Baptismal Register 1849-1904 0r 6, although he did for the third child he fathered with her: george Trudell. I would suggest you try the Hampton Institute records( they have a web site), Santee Normal Training School Records( contact Edith at native Fam. Res. Center, or peacekeeper. they may have some records from there)., and the Pipestone Minnesota Indian School Records(these are at the NARA in Kansas City)

You may be right, there seem to be a couple of extra Levi's floating around too. These are the children I have for Francis and Hinjinwin: George, Lucy, Eli, and David. There could be more. I am descended from Levi Francis Trudell, and he named one of his sons Levi Francis Trudell. Henry had a son that he named Levi Henry Trudell. But there were three other Levis that died in South Dakota between about 1917 and 1944, and I have no idea who they are.

Jimmy: I too found those kids that he had with Hinjiniwin. I couldn't remember if it was Eli or Levi, thanks for the info.. I do not think he fathered any with that Itekagawin. I was able to find out when Nancy Trudell(spelled Truedell)died. she died in 1917, 16 January, in Redwood Minnesota. the the State Record no. and Certificate No. is 011351 and the Record No. is 208896. No information on where she is buried though, it may be on her certificate. I found the information on her at Ancestry.com

I almost forgot. Mary Tuttle, daughter of John C. and Ellen Tuttle was married to Louis Walker, son of Joseph and Louisa Walker. she was first married to a Henry and had a son by him, that died young.

You need to contact peacekeeper, as their baptismal records are listed in oneof the Santee Agency Registers, and the Santee Baptismal Register for 1840-1904. Peacekeepr is our baptismal records specialist.

maggie: my understanding is that Edith already sent you the baptismal records you needed. Jimmy has August Trudell's probate. youneed to ask him to please send you a copy of it.
You also need to contact your cousin Teresa, as she has the school records for the girls, and I believe their baptismal records as well.
Teresa also has Frank(Emma's husband) M. Trudell's baptismal record. Peacekeeper can also send youa copy of it, and emma's if you don't already have them.
